Samsung Galaxy Tab: Wi-fi connection issue - Obtaining IP address..

Just got the new Samsung Galaxy Tab (7") and ran into a Wi-fi issue on day 2. The device connected to a Wi-fi router without any problem on the first day.

On day two, I tried to connect to the Wi-fi router and this is what happened. The device tried to connect, authenticated and then the message "Obtaining IP address.." appears and the device fails to connect. A google search revealed that this was a bug with the device. Apparently, the device fails to release the IP address after disconnecting and tries to connect to that same IP the next day. However, if the router (using DHCP) has assigned this IP to another device, your Tab wont be able to connect to the router.

To resolve this issue, you would have to assign a static IP to your Tab. Details on how to assign a static IP are given below:

1) Click Applications -> Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Wi-Fi settings
2) Click on Menu -> Advanced
3) Select "Use static IP", enter IP address, Gateway, Netmask and DNS information.

Note: You have to guess an IP that wont be assigned to other devices. For Gateway and Netmask, connect via a Laptop/PC and get details from the ipconfig command
Note: In case you do not have the DNS information, you can use Google's DNS servers.

Google's DNS servers: Primary: 8.8.8.8 Secondary: 8.8.4.4

You should now be able to connect to the Wi-Fi router :).

  1. I travel frequently (every other day) internationally (at least) once per week.

    It appears that I will be unable to use my Samsung tablet until this issue is resolved.

    1. James: Not sure if the latest release of Tab has this issue. This was for the 1st Gen Tab from Samsung.
